The Automobile Age arrives in Homer Each spring “Auto Fever” would take hold as the men of the village eyed the latest model automobiles. Once the roads were free of mud people would open their garages and drive. By 1914 autos had become a regular part of life but society was adjusting to the automobile age as licensing and speed limits began to be enforced. As you will see in later postings 1914 was an important year as speeding in the village limits became an issue. The following articles are from April 26 to May 3. Wiggins Demonstrating Reo Automobile ________________________________________ Danville Press Democrat April 26, 1914 page 1 ________________________________________ Charles B. Wiggins was here from Champaign on Friday demonstrating a Reo automobile to prospective buyers. It is understood that there are several prospects in this vicinity. Three New Automobiles in Town ________________________________________ Danville Press Democrat Thursday April 30, 1914 p 3 ________________________________________ Three new automobiles have arrived in town within the past few days. Joseph McElroy, an Overland, H. M. Smoot a Reo, and J. H. Dusan will drive a Cadillac. Mr. Dusan was the last to receive his, it arriving on Tuesday. Constable To Enforce License Law ________________________________________ Press Democrat Sunday May 3, 1914 page 12 ________________________________________ Chas. Hall, constable of this place has published notice in regard to not having 1914 numbers on automobiles. Mr. Hall will endeavor to enforce the law in this respect. McElroy Has Close Call With New Overland ________________________________________ Press Democrat Sunday May 3, 1914 page 12 ________________________________________ Jos. McElroy and his new Overland came very near meeting an untimely end on Friday evening. Mr. McElroy was crossing the Wabash tracks on Main Street when his engine stopped. The fast train from the east was approaching. Mr. McElroy had presence enough of mind to get out and push the machine back out of harm’s way or a terrible accident would undoubtedly have occurred.
