The BIG INTERVEW in association with SILEX TOOLS !! A little late ... but here it is ... our sit down chat with NIGEL MUIR !! Academy mentor and Sports Tasman big boss ... 1) The club seems to be blooding a lot of youngsters through the senior teams that have been mentored by yourself over the previous couple of seasons - must be quite satisfying to see? Yes it is great to see so many talented young men coming through the club. The energy and commitment that many of them are putting into their football is outstanding and their hard work is paying off for them. 2) Your son Zac is playing superbly for the first team? Very much a leader for a young man. We hear he is a talented sportsman - will he be back next year? Zac has made a solid start and continues to develop his game. He has size, attitude and commitment on his side which is always useful. You will have to ask Zac about next year, I can’t keep up with what he is doing next week let alone next year! 3) You have a strong opinion of making sure young players are let into senior football at the right time - this appears to be different from some other clubs views (FC Nelson Colts) - do you think we are on the right track? Everyone has their own opinion on this one. I believe you need a healthy balance of “old heads” and “young guns” to make it work. Young players should be looked at individually. The trick is to give them exposure without ruining their confidence and that’s where the “old heads” are critical. 4) How far can Max Winterton go !!? Max is an exceptionally gifted footballer and a great young man to coach. He will go as far in football as he decides he wants to. 5) Whose is your favourite player in the First Division team at the moment and why? I have been really impressed with the young German lad Basti who has been playing wide right. He is fast, strong, plays with his head up and has a potent right foot. 6) Have you got a few gems in the making playing for the under 15 side you are involved with? Yes keep it fun, give all players good game time, push them to better themselves, and shift them around in positions so they learn about the entire game of football. 7) Is it very noticeable that players that have come through your teams are not only good players but conduct themselves in the right manner as well. You must place high importance on this in coaching young men? Football and sport are just a vehicle for developing our young people. Through sport our youth learn about life. How to set goals, working with others, pushing yourself, accepting tough decisions and learning how to win and lose. It’s a privilege to coach and be part of the life journey for our community’s youth. 8) Would be a great result if the team can go on and win the league this season? Do you think they can do it? They have made a wonderful start and will only improve from here. Certainly they have the capability and potential to win the league. Ultimately this will come down to their commitment, desire and work ethic. The best way to improve the team is to improve yourself. 9) Best or favourite player you have played with? Peter Simonsen, a very calm head on the field with great vision 10) Favourite Sprig and Fern Beer? I enjoy their ginger lager Thanks Nigel, a very valuable club man, keep up the good work!
