The Baya Weaver exhibits amazing architectural skills with its characteristic gourd-shaped nest, hanging firmly from the branches of a tree. Each nest has a very narrow entrance, usually facing downwards and immediately tunnels into a horizontal tunnel, leading into chambers – all intricately woven to support a family, and sturdy enough to brave strong winds and even rain showers. Now coming to the scientific architecture, the inside chambers where the eggs are kept is amazingly temperature controlled, the tunnel portion of the nest usually hangs on the west side in relation to the south west monsoon winds to avoid swing & swaying of the nest resulting in the spill over of the eggs outside. The funnel shaped tunnel and chambers are a complex labyrinth, and even snakes are known to give up, while trying to enter nests. The narrow entrance, facing the ground ensures that access from below is literally ruled out and care is taken to ensure that there is no access to it from a nearby branch or a tree. It make use of locally available materials, it sets a fixed time frame to build its house, it has a climatic controlled interiors, and it is secured from any stranger entering the nest.
