The Black experience in America is distinctively different from that of other immigrants or refugees specifically in terms of the extended period of the institution of slavery and the issue of skin color as a metaphor for dehumanization of Black persons. For almost four centuries (1619-2002) Blacks/African Americans have struggled through turbulent periods of slavery, segregation, and discrimination.
