The Blessed Month The sweet call of the athan, the call to prayer Against the gentle silence of the dark, the calamity of the night Usually awakens me from a peaceful slumber To rise and seek my Lord’s approval But, not this morning, today I am ready I am ready, I await the beautiful voice on my prayer rug The voice that always calls out to me, to all God is the greatest, God is the greatest Come to the prayer, come to the prayer A puzzled bystander wonders why, Why is it that today is different? Today is different because it marks the beginning The beginning of a blessed month A month of worship, of repentance, of reward A month of forgiveness and acceptance A month of abstinence, from all worldly desire All personal pleasure, from the joys of eating, the blessing of drinking A month of living with the less fortunate, the poor and the poverty stricken A month of dedication to the One, the Only Our Creator, our Sustainer, our Maintainer The bystander is baffled once more, why is it that this month is so special? This is the month that God has given us, A sign of his mercy for mankind, for humanity The month of His blessed book, the Quran God’s gift to us, to enlighten our paths, guide our souls It is the month of purity, no evil whisper, To lead you astray, to misguide you The month of salvation: The gates of Hell fire are closed, Those of Paradise are wide open Waiting for God’s loyal servants It is the month of spirituality An act of worship between a servant and their Lord Prayer and charity can be watched, even forced But who can ensure a full day’s fast? The bystander now silent but satisfied, lets the faithful worshipper go Finally alone, with no one but God, The devoted believer raises both hands and thanks God For His endless blessings, everlasting generosity, infinite mercy For being alive this morning, To witness the start of another Ramadan Another month of sacrificing, of sharing, of giving Another chance of begging for His mercy, his forgiveness, his reward A month so beautiful, so precious, so sacred Dedicated to Him, the One, the Only The Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate, The Owner, the Forgiver, The First, the Last poetry.duawrites
