The Bluesfest kicks of this Friday with the super cool pre-event featuring a tug across the Detroit River. Team Canada vs Team USA at Dieppe Park. Friday, July 12, 2013 5:45 PM - Special Event Tug Across the River – Team Canada versus Team USA @ Dieppe Park 7:00 PM - Doors Open to Bluesfest 7:35 PM - Larry McCray 8:50 PM - Dick Wagner 10:00 PM - Cactus 11:30 PM - Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels LARRY McCRAY: McCray’s savage blues-rock guitar and warm, soulful vocals have drawn attention worldwide. Larry was raised on a small farm in Arkansas, moved to Saginaw, working the assembly line by day and a bluesman at night. McCray became the first artist signed by Pointblank Records and suddenly was touring Europe with Eric Clapton, Peter Gabriel, and Albert Collins. In 2000, McCray won the Orville Gibson Blues Guitarist of the Year, beating out such notables as Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton. DICK WAGNER: He lent his guitar playing and songwriting talents to some of the decade’s biggest rock albums including Lou Reed’s Rock N Roll Animal, Alice Cooper’s Welcome to My Nightmare, and Kiss’ Destroyer. Wagner’s fi rst true band, The Frost, formed in the late ‘60s and built up a substantial following in the Wolverine state and was voted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame in 2008. Wagner also served as a songwriting collaborator with Cooper for his monster hits “Welcome to My Nightmare” and “Only Women Bleed”. As a producer and session guitarist Wagner played on Aerosmith’s Get Your Wings, Peter Garbriel’s solo debut, and recorded with Ringo Starr, Etta James, Tina Turner, Roy Orbison, JerryLee Lewis and many more. CACTUS: Conceived in 1969, featured Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck, Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice. When Beck had an auto accident and Stewart joined the Faces, Appice brought in guitarist Jim McCarty from the Detroit Wheels and singer Rusty Day from The Amboy Dukes. Creem Magazine called CACTUS the American Led Zeppelin; tall words, but that is in fact what people were saying about Cactus when this fi rst “Super Group” hit the scene. Rockers such as Van Halen, The Black Crowes, Kid Rock and The Black Keys are documented as being fans and quoted as having been musically influenced by Cactus. Their mark in Rock and Roll history is undisputed. 11:30 PM - Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels Mitch has been called the unsung heart and soul of the Motor City rock & roll and one of the original architects of rock & roll as we know it today. Mitch has been a strong infl uence on many legendary rockers such as Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen and Ted Nugent. Jimi Hendrix even asked Ryder to be his lead singer.
