The Boys and Girls Clubs new Growing Dome Greenhouse! Lynn Cotton, Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the San Luis Valley, along with Richard and Jennet Miller from Growing Spaces Growing Domes, presented information to the club regarding the new geodesic Growing Dome greenhouse that was recently built at the Boys and Girls Club location. The 42-foot dome was made possible by the generosity of local grant funds, and was constructed by a group of club and community volunteers. It is designed to be off-grid, requiring no supplemental heating, and features solar powered vents and fans, and a large water tank with a solar powered waterfall which will help regulate the inside temperature throughout the year, creating its own mini ecosystem. The dome will not only serve as a working greenhouse, providing an optimal environment for growing fresh organic and nutritious vegetables, herbs and fruits year round, but will also provide excellent educational opportunities to the children of the club to learn about local, organic food production and the role it can play in nutrition, sustainability and health. It was mentioned that dome is still a work in progress, and that growing beds, soil, river rock, etc., are still needed to complete the project. Additionally, Lynn provided information regarding the Boys & Girls Clubs Brain Gain summer programming, and of a fundraising event for the club that will take place on Friday, April 25, 2014 at Adams State University with the opening night of the theater production of The Outsiders.
