The British medical journal The Lancet has published a series of papers asserting what public health experts have been learning that it is possible and affordable to save the lives of most new-born babies who now die from preventable causes. The Every New-born series provides comprehensive data for 195 countries regarding neonatal deaths, stillbirths, rankings for countries, rates of progress and coverage of birth certification. Experts say over 70 percent of newborn deaths can be prevented. Nine of the 10 riskiest countries in the world for a baby to be born are in Africa, the authors note. These include Sierra Leone, Somalia, Guinea Bissau, Angola, Lesotho, the DR Congo, Mali and the Central Africa Republic.
