Douglass was disguised as a sailor whose papers he had taken. The American Missionary Association was founded for the purpose of educating and training slaves on this date in 1846. John Stephens Durham, Assistant Editor of the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin, was named minister to Haiti on this date in 1891. Charles Hamilton Houston, Vice Dean of the Howard University Law School, and the first official NAACP counsel, was born on this date in 1895. Bessie Coleman, the first licensed Black aviator, made her first U.S. flight on this date in 1922. Due to racism in America, Coleman trained and was licensed in France. Wilma Rudolph, track-star and polio victim, became the first American woman to win three Olympic Gold Medals in track and field in one year. Rudolph won the 100 (World Record), 200, and 400 meter relay (team World Record) on this date in 1960. On this date in 1977 AM 1230 WBOK in New Orleans officially welcomed the Soul Patrol on the air which saw an increase in listeners in the Greater New Orleans area. It was on this in 1980 at the downtown Municipal Auditorium in New Orleans that the Junkyard Dog and Terry Orndorff defeated Freebirds Buddy Roberts and Terry Gordy for the NWA Mid-South Tag Team Titles before a sellout crowd. Also on that card, Big Ernie Ladd defeated Jim Garvin for the Louisiana State Heavyweight Title. It was on this day in 1982 that FM 98 WYLD in New Orleans Officially welcomed Del Good Good Morning Spencer as its morning show host. In what witnesses described as a police attack on Black college students in Virginia Beach, VA, at least four people were injured and 160 were arrested on this date in 1989. The students were attending a Black intercollegiate celebration.
