The Buddha was enlightened because he said he was and other people said he was enlightened because they believed him and he commanded them to question authority and perceive from their own abode of awareness. And so this caught on and a lot of people woke up to the truth and those people eventually died and left some artifact memes around and some lineages and then the blue eyed foreign barbarian Bodhidharma read some of that shit and his heart blew open his mind to the clear insight that the Buddha existed in his own conscious mind. So he traveled pretty far east and helped ignite Chan Buddhism and Shaolin Kung Fu.
