The Canadian Soska sisters aka Twisted Twins, coming to Melbourne’s Monster Fest this week, are at the forefront of an international new wave of female horror film makers. In the midst of post production for their first action film, Vendetta, the 31-year-olds take time out to discuss their love for horror and their careers so far in the genre film industry. 1. How did you both get a taste for horror? Sylvia: I honestly cannot remember a time that I wasn’t drawn to horror. Maybe because it was double taboo for young children and especially girls to watch those films and read those books, but it was something I really wanted to have in my life. Our mum watched horror movies with us and lent her extensive Stephen King collection for us to read. She was always there to educate as a parent and talk to us about what was in our entertainment, because of that, horror feels like coming home to us. Jen: I feel that horror chose us rather than the other way around. I’ve never had any irrational fears. A tarantula is the same as a kitty or a snake or a rat or a parakeet. They’re just cute critters. I remember going up to our local pet shop and asking to hold the tarantula so often that they ended up just giving it to us, ha. We’d go to our local video store and hang out in the horror section like it was a library, just turning over the covers and reading the backs, hunting for the best gore. Our first horror movie was Poltergeist. It scared the shit out of us, even though we loved it, and then my mum did something that would change our lives forever. She pulled back the curtain and told us about the writers, actors, directors, and monster makers and told us it was their job to scare us. And we were all like, “whoa, wait, what?
