The Carers Association welcomes the Department of Social - TopicsExpress

The Carers Association welcomes the Department of Social Protection’s decision to reinstate Anthony Doolan’s Carers Allowance. Anthony cares full-time for Paul, his 16-year-old son with autism, and drives 80km a day to bring Paul to the Stepping Stones ABA school in Kilcloon, Co Meath. The Department of Social Protection had terminated his Carers Allowance following a desk top review. This review concluded that Paul was not so invalided or disabled as to require full-time care and attention. The Carers Association welcomes the Department’s acknowledgement that this payment should not have been withdrawn and their apology to Anthony for the stress caused by their decision. We also welcome the Department’s invitation to sit down with Family Carers and The Carers Association to work towards developing a fairer application and review process. We have however highlighted similar cases to the Doolans across the country and we are calling for current reviews to be suspended pending the introduction of the new system and for family carers who have recently lost their Carers Allowance as a result of these reviews to have these payments reinstated with immediate effect.
