The Case of the Missing Locker….. Sometime in 1967/1968 a locker from Rizal Hall mysteriously disappeared! Captain Noli Latuga conducted an investigation but couldn’t make heads or tails of the disappearance… Let me start from the beginning; we had several Cadets who were our main food suppliers…Romy Lee from Panciteria Ah Lee, located beside the Main Theater in Quiapo; Eddie Azcona, his father owned the Tropical Hut Supermarket, and Louie Miranda, Bonifacio Market in Caloocan! Every night after dinner, we had several Cadets who would smuggle out rice from the Mess Hall…during dinner, the would keep on calling out to the “Bays” “Kanin pa dito” …remember, we had a limit on our ulam, but not on the rice! The big boys in our group would slip the rice into empty plastic bread bags and keep the bags under their loose FEMA t-shirts….back in our quarters, after Lights Out, we would lay out old newspapers and spread the rice over them. The corned beef, pansit, pork and beans, spam and other goodies, courtesy of our suppliers, would be placed on top of the still warm rice. Everybody digs in, kamayan style! Kaniya-kaniyang tago ng ulam under the rice para ma-safety! Walang kasing sarap ang kumain after Taps and Lights Out! This feasting went on for quite a while…then someone suggested that we cook our corned beef and spam para mas masarap… we didn’t have a stove, so we got our thinking caps on and pondered… I don’t remember who it was, but one of our fellow hungry Cadets suggested that we use the inner shelves of a vacant locker para pang-gatong… that started it all. The shelves went one by one. Soon, we ran out of shelves…we took apart the locker and concealed the remains on top of the overhanging roof of our quarters. By the end of the semester, the locker was completely gone! At the end of the semester, Captain Noli Latuga was doing an inventory of the equipment in our quarters and was befuddled because he just couldn’t get his figures right. He never did find out what happened to the missing locker! Captain Latuga, if you read this confession, the statute of limitations has run out! Update 08.13.14: Cadet Zander Masing has admitted to knowing where the missing locker is! Calling Captain Latuga....
