The ‘Cases’ Somerset Rebels now know exactly what they need to do when they face Ipswich at the Oaktree Arena on Friday (10th) night if they are to qualify for their 3rd Premier League Championship Grand Final in as many years, Friday’s match being sponsored by Bikestyle of Clevedon. With Ipswich losing at Scunthorpe yesterday evening 49-41, it means that Somerset need to beat the Witches by 7 points or more in order to top their semi-final group and book their place in the Grand Final against Edinburgh, the two sides having contested the 2013 Championship Final, Somerset coming out on top on that occasion to win their maiden League Championship title. Friday night will be Ipswich’s fourth visit of the season to the Oaktree Arena, two of the previous three having seen the Suffolk side depart on the back of 40 and 28 point defeats, though sandwiched between those two matches Ipswich contained the Rebels to a mere 8 point victory. A repeat of that night’s result, though, would still be sufficient for Somerset to progress through to the Championship Grand Final, but Ipswich will still harbour hopes of their own of making the Grand Final at Somerset’s expense, a loss by 6 points or less on Friday night is their minimum requirement if it is to be the Witches and not Somerset who will be lining up against Edinburgh. Somerset are hopeful that Charles Wright and club captain Olly Allen will have made full recovery’s from knocks which saw them withdraw from the Rebels recent matches against Scunthorpe and Ipswich respectively, though they continue to be without Brady Kurtz who is still side-lined due to a broken arm which was sustained, ironically enough, when Ipswich visited the Oaktree Arena back in late August, the club continuing to operate rider replacement for the young Aussie, the only facility available to them in the circumstances. “Apart from the Grand Final itself, matches don’t come much bigger than this,” said Somerset promoter Debbie Hancock, “Friday night is a must win match for us, so the rally call is for all those Somerset Rebels fans out there to get down to the Oaktree Arena on Friday night and get behind the team as they bid to qualify for what would be an unprecedented 3rd successive Championship Grand Final.”
