The Catholic Calendar and Daily Meditation Friday, December 12, 2014 Our Lady of Guadalupe Scripture from todays Liturgy of the Word: new.usccb.org/bible/readings/121214.cfm Zechariah 2:14-17 Or: Revelation 11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10ab Judith 13:18bcde, 19 Luke 1:26-38 Or: Luke 1:39-47 A reflection on todays Sacred Scripture: Today the Church celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. It is fitting therefore that the gospels focus is on our Blessed Mother, and the Annunciation in particular. We are familiar with the accounting of the angel, Gabriels appearance to Mary telling her that she would conceive Jesus, the Son of the Most High. Our Blessed Mother, though a young girl at the time, agreed to the Divine plan and became vital to the mission of God. (see Luke 1:32 ) We, too, could be called favored ones just as Gabriel addressed Mary, for we, too, through our baptism and confirmation have been touched by the Holy Spirit, not in the sense of conception, but to be marked as special, as Christians. We, too, each have a role in the divine plan. We too are temples of the Holy Spirit and carry Jesus in our mortal frames for a few moments when we receive Holy Communion, as did the Blessed Mother during the nine months of her pregnancy. It is only fitting therefore that every day, but especially today, we ask our Blessed Mother to guide and protect us. Christ gave His Mother to us from His deathbed on the Cross. She can guide us in our efforts to be good stewards of our bodies and souls and the lives of others. We honor her when we are faithful Christians, carrying out the mission of her Son. Dispel our darkness with the light of your presence, and make us worthy of your gifts. [from the Divine Office, Second Week of Advent] - Joan Murphy, OCDS
