The Christmas Ornament Longtime readers here will remember the story of Sissy purloining a Christmas ornament, which never surfaced visibly but could occasionally be heard, usually at dead of night, rolling around in the office where the cats spend the hours of darkness. I havent heard it for months and I supposed it was either broken or forgotten. Thats what I thought. Guess what I heard last night when I got up to check on why the dogs were barking? I heard that special sound a glass Christmas ball makes when it is being batted across a slate floor. Of course I immediately opened the office door and flipped on the light. And did I spot the ornament? I should snicker not. Most of the cats blinked sleepily at me. Sam was sitting by the window staring intently into the darkness and obviously wishing he was out there patrolling the premises. Sissy was sitting on the windowsill near him, trying to look like she had been there for hours. I searched the office. No ornament. Either I was hearing things, which I doubt since I was literally right outside the door, or Sissy has pulled another fast one on me, having somehow figured out that Christmas was approaching. I wonder what she has planned for when we actually get out the ornament boxes and begin trimming the tree. She is supposed to be locked in the office, as are all of the cats, because Kate, our house manager, has severe feline allergies. But I no longer take anything for granted with Sissy. Anyone want to speculate?
