Todays Reading Nahum 3 06/10/14 Not all prophets are well-known, liked or viewed helpful. Very little is known about several prophets in the biblical world. Nahum is one of the so-called “minor prophets” because their books were so short, yet who gave a major message. Though Nahum’s words may have given hope to Israel, they were not accepted by the Assyrians. Compared to Jonah who successfully reformed Nineveh and staved off judgment, Nahum was apparently not so successful an evangelist. The Ninevites went back to their evil ways, resulting in the predicted judgments by this lone prophet which were fulfilled in 612 B.C. with the capture of Nineveh by the Babylonians. But aside from the political ends, several spiritual lessons stand out in this prophetic book: 1. God controls His universe, and nations rise to be His ministers in carrying out divine purposes. 2. God graciously grants freedom to all people to cooperate with His holy principles and demonstrate righteousness. 3. Evil reaps its own reward; justice prevails in the end. 4. God delights in “holy reversals” – turning an upside down world where wrongs seem so right, back to right side up. During the darkest days, He often reassures His people through the voice of a little known prophet messenger. The message may be short, pointed and talk of seemingly impossible coming changes, but it is truth and gives hope. This is much like the Lord did for a little band of disappointed Christians through the weak voice of a teenage girl that provided our spiritual forefathers and mothers in 1844 much hope and sound spiritual guidance.
