The City of Malden has lost a true hero, Sam Cherone, 86, who passed away on November 2, 2014. Sam was born in Pittston, Pennsylvania and was drafted into the United States Army in 1945 while still in high school. During nearly 30 years of service in the Army, Sam served in World War II, the West Berlin Airlift, Korea and Vietnam. He rose through the ranks to Master Sergeant then completed Officers Candidate School and was promoted to First Lieutenant. Throughout his highly decorated service to our nation, Sam distinguished himself in combat as a Communications Officer, Communications Engineer and Air Observer in combat missions. He impressively received more than 20 distinguished military medals. Sam met his wife Josephine Morelli, from the Edgeworth section of Malden while serving in the Army. Sam and Josephine raised five sons in the Malden home where they lived for 50 years. In addition to being a celebrated veteran, Sam was well known as a wood carver, and several of his magnificent creations are on display at Harvard University. His celebrated works include a Rooster Weathervane at the old firehouse on 167 Pearl Street and the Golden Tornado Lion weathervane at the Macdonald Stadium clubhouse. He has also competed in many international wood carving exhibitions. Sam was equally passionate about assisting other veterans. A fixture at many events, he was also a staunch advocate for veterans’ services. Sam, a member of the “greatest generation” will be truly missed.
