The Crack Magazine thecrackmagazine/view-editorial/2078 Christmas came early for me this year when I managed to get my ears around Slow Decades’ rather fabulous debut album, The Frost & The Concrete. Two years in the making it encompasses everything from the lo-fi charm of Margaret Bad Boy to Confetti (which unfurls like a flower) to Hesitation, which sent the kind of shivers up my neck I last experienced with Antony and the Johnsons’ Mercury Prize scooping I Am a Bird Now album. The band (let’s name ‘em: Gary Cameron (clarinet and piano), John Egdell (drums and guitar), Paul Gardner (guitar and keyboards), Ben Lowes-Smith (vocals and guitar) and Sam Sheppard (bass guitar)) are from Newcastle and have some of same heart-stopping qualities of fellow Tynesiders Lanterns On The Lake, giving their songs plenty of room to breathe, and succeeding in drawing you in close to their indie bosom.
