The Crimean affair led to barely any loss of life, and the population clearly wanted to be part of Russia. The White Houses reaction has been the opposite of its reaction to Chechnya. What bullshit Tariq comes out with these days. The Crimeans voted in a instant referendum held after a Russian invasion, thats not like democracy. And the White House has made it as clear as it did over Chechnya that it isnt going to take any military action against Russia. The rest is a series of Russian apologist tropes. The Ukrainians fought with the Nazis in WWII, no mention of what Stalin might have done to piss them off so much. James Baker promised Gorbachev that NATO would not expand to the East, so any Russian pressure on its former colonies is a reasonable reaction. And in view of Tariqs assertion that anyone could have carried out Assads August chemical attacks in Damascus, this is rank hypocrisy: In the calculus of western interests there is no suffering, whatever its scale, which cannot be justified. Chechens, Palestinians, Iraqis, Afghans, Pakistanis are of little importance.
