The Croods (2013) With PIXAR out of commission, Dreamworks had - TopicsExpress

The Croods (2013) With PIXAR out of commission, Dreamworks had the best opportunity to top them. Usually, Dreamworks is hit-or-miss. How to Train Your Dragon was their high point. It proved that they could handle the same style of storytelling. When you look at some of their other animated features, you can always sense a homage to a particular show or its characters. None of their films present this more clearly than The Flintstones......sorry I meant The Croods. Everything outside of your cave is dangerous and wants to kill you, so dont even try anything new. This following statement is the code by which the Croods live by. Grug (Nicholas Cage) is the head of the family along with his wife Ugga (Catherine Keener) and his kids Eep (Emma Stone), Thunk (Clark Duke), and Sandy (Randy Thom). Eep is the free spirit of the family and only wants to discover what is outside her cave. Grug tries to put a stop to her rebel attitude but before he can, something happens. All of a sudden, their world starts to crumble quite literally. They are then cast out into the unknown where they meet Guy (Ryan Reynolds) who has adapted to the world. Through Guy and their willing to adapt, the family will discover the world that they thought they knew in a different light. Honestly, when the trailers came out for The Croods, it didnt capture my attention, so I skipped it. While it wasnt terrible, it wasnt anything that I would rush out to see. But I did end up finding some enjoyment with the film. The voice acting is good but Id be lying if I said that some of the characters arent forgettable. Nicholas Cage is entertaining to listen to in nearly everything so no complaints there. Emma Stone also leaves an impression but except for them and the daughter, everybody else is forgettable. This films strongest point is the visuals. Nearly every scene outside of the cave is beautiful to look at. Also, there are a few jokes that hit the right mark. Other than facing the world, there is no real conflict for the family to go through. I dont want to put this movie down but I feel that these issues should be addressed. In closing, The Croods is visually beautiful to look at but aside from a few characters and jokes, the end result is meh. C+
