The Cubs owners and management have gotten hammered repeatedly by the local media (and many fans) for not spending big money on quality free agents. So with the buzz out there about them opening their wallet to make a big bid for star pitchers like Jon Lester or Max Scherzer, I was a bit baffled to see the suggestion in a baseball column in the Trib that Jake Peavy could be a good fall-back plan if the bidding war on Lester gets out of hand. Peavy pitched decently for the Giants during their pennant run, but was horrendous for Boston (1-9, 4.72 ERA) earlier in the season. Hes going to be 34 next May with a lot of mileage on his arm, and he has been mediocre at best since his career peaked in San Diego in 2008-09. Would Cubs fans really be satisfied with Peavy over Lester or Scherzer (I wouldnt)? I think they have to dig deep, even if it means winning a bidding war with the Soulless Bronx Money Machine, both to help make this a winning team in the short run, and to stop taxing the patience of fans who have suffered through five straight awful losing seasons.
