The Cumberland, the eponymous replica canal boat in Cumberland, Maryland, is finally getting some TLC. In 1976, volunteers and local citizens built the full-sized replica cargo boat, a celebration of the bicentennial and Cumberland’s new national park. For 38 years, the land-based boat has been a landmark, first at Lock 75 and now at Canal Place. Although she has held up remarkably well, 38 years of the elements take their toll. Thanks to a gracious donation from the C&O Canal Association, work started last week on giving “The Cumberland” a new deck, rudder, and other improvements. Stay tuned for more updates, and we look forward to welcoming folks aboard again in 2015! (bjh)
