I did not encounter the Cathecism of the christian faith until - TopicsExpress

I did not encounter the Cathecism of the christian faith until 1970, perhaps because of the itinerant nature of my existence at that period of my life. I went through four schools in the six years of my primary education in the most volatile parts of my country Nigeria. Emeka Odimegwu Ojukwu was the Brigade Commander in the Kano of my first seven years in life, Francis Adekunle Fajuyi was the Governor in the Ibadan of 1967 that most southerners like my Ijebu parents herded to in train journeys reminiscent of Autschwitz. Why I was back in the Zaria of 1968 beats my imagination, for the simple reason that I was better oriented in the extended family culture I was born. Therefore I did throw the kick of an angry bull at the prospect of being uprooted again just when I was getting clear-eyed about life in secondary school at Military School in Zaria. Whatever damage that fresh dislocation did to me remains to be weighed against the benefit of stability that would be six years long, see me through secondary school which very definitely served wrong curriculum for the child I was shaping up to be, but which very definitely impacted on my soul. In those six years, elementary as it was, I got real & sustained introduction to my Creator. Some of lifes greatest events have the most innocuous beginning. Jesus Christ my Lord & Saviour [& yours too, I ever so hope & pray] was born in a manger, of all the arrival lounges such d portentous event could have held in. It says something, I think, of the faithfulness, vision, foresight & tenacity of purpose of God the Father, from Gen 1:26 to Gen 3:22-24. If He would not abandon Adam & Eve to eternal damnation- Gen 3:22, why would He now abandon you, or for that matter any other of His people to Satans device. That is what I appreciate the most about 1970, the year that the cathecism was introduced to me. I would only begin to truly appreciate that seemingly innocuos concoction of the Church fathers in April 1979, when I accepted Jesus Christ with a dismissive wave of my hand, greatly bemused at the ardor of this my transformed classmate who had come to intrnduce Jesus Christ to me in the very last of my sixteen quarters in University of Ife as it then was; as a final year student of English. Does anybody remember Nicky Cruz?
