The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) celebrates the life and legacy of author and educator, Maya Angelou. Angelou, who passed away at her home in Winston-Salem, NC. She was 86 years old. “There is perhaps no better example of the transformative power of the arts than Maya Angelou,” said Judith Terra, Chair of DCCAH. “It was through the arts, writing and acting, that she found her voice -- a voice that has touched millions of people around the world.” “Maya Angelou was a powerful voice in literature,” said Lionell Thomas, Executive Director of DCCAH. “We celebrate the artistry of her poems and novels and the impact she had on society in giving voice to the voiceless.” Angelou was awarded the Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian honor, in 2011 by President Barack Obama.
