The Dangers of Do What You Love Advice We often hear famous/successful people give us advice or quotes that if you dont love what you do, its not worth doing. If your job doesnt make you happy, quit. I think that while these are good pieces of advice, they need to be understood in the correct perspective: 1. Do we even know what we love to do? Most people confuse this as their ideal result or outcome and not what they love doing. When we say we love doing something, it is something we are willing to do passionately for free and because of this high level of passion, a positive result may come out of it. 2. When we figure out what it is we love, it may mean that we still have to put up with crappy jobs or jobs that are unrelated to what we love at first. These jobs help build character, discipline and provide resources to make us become ready when we eventually take the plunge and pursue what we love. Lets all be careful not to let these quotes make us quitters like Ive been seeing from a lot of people. The quitters use these quotes as an excuse to not do their jobs well because they claim its not what they love. There is nothing wrong with having jobs that we dont love. Sometimes, you take what is available to satisfy a need. If youre lucky, you learn to appreciate it. If youre luckier, you discover and grow to love it. In my case, I dont love my job or what I do sometimes but I have grown to appreciate it because it supports the people that I love. It also helps me help other people as we generate more jobs for the Filipinos. Someday, I hope to figure out what I love and pursue it. But for now, should I quit? ;)
