The Department of Health and Human Services has opened a federal register notice on Preventing Skin Cancer Through Reduction of UV Exposure. This notice will be open for public comment until September 4, 2013. Information obtained will be used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in assisting the Office of Surgeon General with an anticipated response to the public health issue of skin cancer, including deadly melanoma. We are requesting information on barriers to UV exposure from the sun and from indoor tanning devices and on evidence-based strategies to reduce UV exposure in the population. Skin cancer rates, including rates of melanoma, are increasing in the United States and worldwide. An estimated 60,000 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. every year, with approximately 8,500 deaths from melanoma. A majority of skin cancers are caused by exposure to UV radiation from the sun or from indoor tanning devices, and are therefore preventable. This federal register notice will allow the public to provide comments on opportunities and actions that can be taken by all levels of the government, civic organizations, health care providers, educational institutions, worksites, industry, service providers, individuals and others to reduce exposure to UV radiation.
