The Department of Mathematics will be hosting the first (of 3!) - TopicsExpress

The Department of Mathematics will be hosting the first (of 3!) of its Fall Undergraduate Mathematics Colloquium next Wednesday @ 2:45PM in Howard Hall 309. The speaker will be Dr. Brian Winkel, Prof. Emeritus, United States Military Academy at West Point. All are welcome! Light refreshments will be served. The title and abstract are below and are on the attached flyer. TITLE: M&M’s Can Drive the Study of Differential Equations and More! SPEAKER: Dr. Brian Winkel TIME: 2:45-3:45 PM PLACE: Howard Hall 309 ABSTRACT: We describe SIMIODE-Systemic Initiative for Modeling Investigations and Opportunities with Differential Equations (simiode.org) a community of teachers and learners who are interested in teaching and learning differential equations through modeling scenarios and technology up front and throughout the process. We illustrate this with data generating experiments using M&M’s (lots of bags to go around!), modeling, estimating parameters, long term behavior study, solving difference and differential equations, and model validation. The idea is to investigate a reality FIRST which then lead to differential equations models, not do grind out techniques for differential equations and maybe apply them in a project. The entire course is modeling scenario driven and uses technology all the time. We also consider the sublimation of carbon dioxide, modeling a falling column of water, and LSD in the body and its effects on simple mathematics skills! Check it all out at simiode.org – simply register and for teachers join the Teachers Group and for students join the Students Group.
