The Department of the Arts etc. has been viewed by successive governments as a cash cow where family members and related businesses can graze freely at the public expense. This fiasco about the web site whose Irish language content came from Google Translate merely demonstrates the fuzziness of financial accounting in this area of the public service. At heart was the content supplied by an external supplier with whom there is no doubt a contract setting out what they had to do and how much they were to be paid. Why could material not be supplied in house? To get a job in the civil service beyond the level of pernicious pen-pusher you have to pass an oral test n Irish, I thought. Whats the Irish for kickback?
