The Dig to Save Clam Pass: Day 117 9/9/2014 Today was a much easier day for me than yesterday, although it was certainly still tough. Just like yesterday, I arrived at the beach early in the morning, prepared the dig site for battle, and then fought the noontime high tide tooth and nail to protect the dam. Unlike yesterday, the tide wasnt quite so high, and I had a helper. A man started talking to me while I worked; after a while he left; a few minutes later he came back and grabbed a shovel and joined me in the battle! Working together, we managed to stay ahead of the relentless waves. Teamwork. Go team! There have been surveyors on the beach the last few days working with GPS and theodolite measuring the changes that have occurred to the landscape as the sea has shifted the sand around this summer. They have been working all over the beach and wading in and out of the sea taking readings & notes. Their work is necessary to prepare the next dredging permit application for the US Army Corps of Engineers. The Pelican Bay Services Division responded to my email inquiry yesterday, but did not directly answer all of my questions...however, their response left me even more certain than I previously was that there is currently no permit in hand which would allow the pass to be dredged this fall. I will write back and ask more plainly this time. I need to know. Dangerously high tides and permitting problems aside, it was a sunny & beautiful day. The weather couldnt have been nicer. Its always pleasant to work at the pass, even under adverse conditions -- the worst day on the beach is always better than any day in an office. Todays wildlife encounters included a group of six (!) manatees that swam into the pass, and a three foot long barracuda -- the first one I have ever seen in the wild. He cruised by the beach like a speedy submarine while I was defending the dam.
