The Disappeared Classicists in the UK 6 years ago there was a Research Assessment Exercise that showed about 560 Classicists in the UK with decent research to be evaluated. Last week, publication of Research Excellence Framework (REF) that shows 382 Classicists with decent research for evaluation. Question is where did the missing 178 Classicists get disappeared to? This might suggest to some that there is a 32% fall in the number of research active Classicists in the UK over a 6 year period. Obviously lots of gamesmanship played by Universities in REF 2014 20 and stories of bullying reported in THE. Yet, these are big numbers and would suggest a major contraction in the Research Power of Classics in the UK. Worrying, Kent increased number of staff returned by 24% but elsewhere reductions of as much as 50% and 2 Universities did not submit to Classics, reducing number in Wales to just 1 and in Northern Ireland to none.
