The ECREA statement to the Methodist Church of Fiji On behalf of the Ecumenical Centre for Research, Education and Advocacy (ECREA) we would like to convey our deepest condolences on the untimely death of Rev. Dr. Tuikilakila Waqairatu, The President of the Methodist Church in Fiji. During his short term as President of the Methodist Church of Fiji, Rev. Dr. Waqairatu had been a great supporter and mentor of ECREA’s sustained dialogue process to build and rebuild relationships among the Christian churches in Fiji. At a social gathering for leaders of the different Churches in July 2012, hosted by the Methodist Church of Fiji at Epworth House, Rev. Dr. Waqairatu delivered an opening address to the leaders present. In his message Rev. Dr. Tuikilakila emphasized the need for the Christian churches to work together as one body of Christ. He acknowledged that we are many parts, whilst he recognized that all the different parts are gifted with many different gifts. He called on the present to recognize the need to collectively use these different gifts to develop the way forward in building the Kingdom of God here in Fiji. He assured the church leaders that the 21st century is the century for the union of the Christian churches therefore they need to come together often to dialogue and build on mutual love, recognition, respect as they are all engaged in the mission of the Kingdom. He stressed the need to be aware of Kingdom vision and mission; to recognize the special gifts each church has; to build and strengthen the Christian network; and to share resources and ministry. Only then will the unity and solidarity of the Christian churches in Fiji will become visible, he mentioned. We celebrate and thank God for Waqairatu‘s life; by example he showed commitment to unite all Christians in Fiji and we appreciate his effort to initiate renewal of the Methodist Church of Fiji. The Ecumenical Centre for Research, Education and Advocacy extend our sympathy and prayers especially to the Waqairatu family and the Methodist Church as a whole at this time as they mourn the loss of someone whom we all love.
