The EU provides crisis management support to municipalities in Lebanon Participants in a workshop in the framework of the EU-funded Second Cycle of Capacity Building Programme for Local Leaders from Beirut Southern Suburbs on Crisis Management & Mediation received their certificates on Wednesday 01 October during a ceremony at Rotana Hotel - Hazmieh. Programme Officer for Relief and Recovery at the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon, Mr Simon Bojsen-Moller and United Nations Development Programme Director, Mr Luca Renda delivered the certificates to the 23 participants. “The methodology offered in this training is exceptional, easy and taken from real life stories” said the director of the social municipal department at the Haret Hreik municipality. “Our goal is to support you and better enable you to manage challenges and crises like the one you are faced with today” said Mr. Renda to the participants. In turn, Mr. Bojsen-Moller said: “The EU is committed to supporting Syrian refugees as well as Lebanese vulnerable communities, and will continue to do so. Municipal council members, local NGO representatives, representatives of municipal police departments, social workers, heads and members of social development centres from Al Chiyah, Haret Hreik, Furn El Chebbak, Al Ghbayri, Burj El Barajneh and Al Mrayjeh attended the workshop from 29 September to 1 October 2014 in Hazmieh at Rotana Hotel - Hazmieh. The participants took part in training centred on negotiation techniques, problem solving mechanisms, mediator’s role, and conflicts’ causes and dynamics. This workshop aimed at enhancing the participants’ skills and capacities in identifying and analysing local conflicts, addressing them using various conflict resolution and preventive approaches, and establishing community peace building mechanisms to enhance social cohesion, especially with the increasing impact of the Syrian crisis and the growing pressure on the Lebanese society.
