The Erin Brockovich firm (yes- the lady from the film of the same name) is in WV investigating what happened to this town and its water supply. If I understand the information correctly, the state itself does not have an inspection program - unlike Maine where I grew up. This may have contributed to the situation at hand because no oversight in terms of inspections or such occurred. The company was required to report all chemicals, but according to this news story they didnt. Big surprise! In my opinion, if all that exists is a passive reporting system you have a great potential for disaster when companies dont comply with the requirements and no one holds them accountable through inspection. Frankly, I was surprised to hear that the state didnt, I assumed every state would be interested in their own environmental concerns like my home state of Maine. At the start of the disaster, people were directed not to drink or bathe with their tap water, and it couldnt just be boiled. So for all needs- except to flush the commode, they had to use bottled water for several days. Apparently there are still questions about water quality at this time. The water situation affected about 300,000 people and businesses. And naturally, as suits started to get filed, the company filed for chapter 11 status which froze those suits. These cases fall within the sphere of Environmental Law, and are a great place to utilize a Legal Nurse Consultant. People like myself can help to analyze the medical records to help determine the impact of any exposure to the chemicals involved on individuals, if any. In addition, we can analyze how previous medical conditions may be impacted by exposure, not too mention a variety of other services that may prove useful to the case.
