The Evolution of Sin. Stage 1: Khatraa (Notion) All sins begin in the nafs (self) as a passing notion (Khatra). If Taqwa or God fearingness comes to one’s aid, and one rejects the notion and repels it and says A-oozu billaahi minash shaytaanir rajeem (“I take refuge in Allaah from the execrable devil”) in disgust and loathing, one will remain safe from it. Stage 2: Waswasah (Suggestion or Temptation) If there is no Taqwaa and one does nothing, it will presently return as a suggestion or temptation (Waswasah). It will be harder, but if one rejects it and repels it, saying from ones heart the Ta-awwuz just mentioned, it will leave.
