The Federal Government should ramp up the approval process for the 101 applications for the low-cost (LC) and low medium-cost (LMC) flats maintenance via the 1Malaysia Maintenance Fund (TP1M) in Penang. To date, only one application of RM100,000 for Taman Emas, Sungai Batu, Teluk Kumbar has been approved, ravelled Jagdeep Singh Deo, Chairman of State Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee. “Under the 10th Malaysia Plan, the Federal Government has allocated RM500 million for TP1M while the state has also allocated RM50 million for Housing Assisted Programme of Penang, Yes!...For LC and LMC, the Federal Government will bear 90 percent and 70 percent respectively while the state will pay the rest,” he explained at a recent press conference in Komtar. Moreover, the fund managed by the Urban Wellbeing Ministry and Federal Territories will pay for the fixing of leaking roofs, faulty elevators and painting works of LC and LMC units. Notably, 53 TP1M applications were submitted to the ministry through the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP), while 46 were submitted through the Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) since August 2012. Separately, Penang’s newly formed Selection Process Enhancement Committee (SPEC) is still waiting for the offer list of applicants qualified for affordable housing. “Once the offer list is completed, it would be announced through an exhibition in Komtar’s third floor, the state’s newsletter (Buletin Mutiara) and made available in state assemblymen service centres,” said Jagdeep Singh. “The selection of applicants eligible for the affordable housing would be determined by the committee which includes the housing chief assistant secretary, assistant secretary and assistant administrative officer.”
