The Feynman Club St. Stephen’s College invites you for a talk titled Redundancy of Magnetic Monopoles Date: Tomorrow, Friday, 17 October 2014 Venue: NPLT Time: 12:20 PM by Aditya Guha II Physics Abstract As proposed by Dirac in 1931, magnetic monopoles are an integral part of the theory that aims to explain the quantization of a charge. Since then, several attempts have been made to detect monopoles in laboratories around the world. Of late, artificial monopoles have been created in labs but a Dirac monopole still eludes us. In this presentation, I will question the eight decade old mathematical formulation of magnetic monopoles required for electric charge to be quantized following an illustration of Diracs monopole. A thorough thought-experiment will be presented which while reducing the concept of a magnetic monopole to redundancy will introduce the concept of an entity defined as the magnetic atom in the process. Following this, an experimental set-up will be proposed for the above model to account for this result and to verify it. A final conclusion will be presented revealing why natural magnetic monopoles will never be found and the implications this holds for particle physics. Since the above thought-experiment is my personal endeavor in breaching the limits of theoretical physics, the results are not yet verified. I would thus welcome suggestions during and after the talk on the same. A knowledge of introductory electrodynamics will be sufficient.
