The First Lady, as usual, misses the point with her comments. She claims that segregation is as bad today in some places as it was at the time of Brown in 1954 She claims that many families are abandoning the city schools and that may be true, but she fails to address why. She seeks to imply that it is racism. Families have told me, however, that it was not racial diversity that drove them from the urban areas. They say it was urban decay, the high crime rate and a general sense of not feeling safe for them or their family. That had less to do with the color of ones skin and much more to do with the values the people hold. Folks who have fled the inner city have told me that there is a lack of a sense of community, a lack of a sense of pride in where they live ... so they left because they wanted to live in a place where a sense of community mattered. Where the values were shared and that feeling safe to go to the market, school or simply walk down the sidewalk did not lead to a sense of dread and fear. Michelle Obama, as she often does, sees a white hood instead of being willing to look at the real issue. The real issue is a decline of values, shared values that has held this republic together. The decline of those values will lead people to seek them in a new place instead of staying where those values are not shared nor appreciated. theblaze/stories/2014/05/19/michelle-obama-would-like-students-to-monitor-family-members-for-racial-insensitivity/
