The Flashmatic In 1955, Zenith introduced a TV remote control system called the Flashmatic, which used four light-sensitive cells mounted in the corners of the TV cabinet. By shining a flashlight into it, one cell raised the volume, another lowered it, and the other two changed the channel. Only problem: The cells couldn’t distinguish between a flashlight and other light sources—like lamps or sunlight—so channels would often change without warning.
