The Flint Hills refinery in North Pole will cease production of gasoline on May 1 and jet fuel on June 1. The shutdown will lead to the loss of about 80 jobs. The company cited as one reason for the closure the costs associated with the cleanup of contamination that occurred under the refinerys former owners. Also cited was a competitive disadvantage caused by the refinery paying a higher cost for the crude it uses compared to what refineries in the Lower 48 pay. Refineries in the Lower 48 also have lower energy costs since they are powered by natural gas. Should state officials try to keep the North Pole refinery open? If so, what should they do?
