The Front Door THE FRONT DOOR OPENS SOON AT ‘INDUSTRIAL CHIC’ EATERY The layer of paper covering the front windows of 216 Front St. will soon be removed to reveal a trendy new restaurant with a love of local arts, entertainment and community. Twenty-seven-year-old Jacob Schieman is reinventing the historic building into an airy, casual dining room that serves locally-sourced food and an impressive variety of craft beers. The Front Door, with a new outdoor patio and a big glass garage door, will open this spring. The exact date depends on how quickly Schieman’s efforts come together to create what he calls an “industrial chic” décor. “It’s all about Sarnia,” says Schieman who grew up here but travelled extensively before returning two years ago. “I’m taking elements from Chemical Valley – like galvanized metal and exposed brick – and working with the colours of the beach and the water.” Schieman took possession of the building in January and assumed the onerous job of renovating with help from family and friends. He’s already carted out a shocking 15 tonnes of plaster stripped from the walls. The century-old building has seen a succession of restaurants in recent years, including Cupper’s Cove, which shut down last summer. It hasn’t had a major makeover since the 1980s when stucco was all the rage. When Schieman removed the first layer of drywall, he found another and another until he reached the original brick and was surprised to find six windows along the south wall. Carpenters have now filled the windows with exhibit boxes where Schieman intends to put artwork and lighting. The drop ceiling is gone
