The Fruit of The Spirit - Meekness But the fruit of the Spirit - TopicsExpress

The Fruit of The Spirit - Meekness But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. (Galatians 5:22 - 23 KJV) Thought: The word meekness means to have a mild temper; soft; gentle; not easily provoked or irritated; yielding; given to forbearance under injuries. These were the qualities of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We too must possess these qualities. When someone upsets us we must not be quick to lash out or to seek vengeance. We have to remember that those around us are watching and if we do not carry ourselves as we should then that gives them reason to drag the name of Jesus in the dirt. In the Old Testament we can see that Moses, a mighty man of God possessed this quality. Numbers 12:3 tells us Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth. So we see that Moses was the meekest man on the face of the earth, yet God used him in a mighty way. When we are meek and humble is when God can use us because in the midst of our meekness God will be glorified. Jesus is the Son of God and was proclaimed the King of the Jews. The Jewish religious leaders of that day were looking for the fulfillment of prophecy of the coming Messiah and thought He was going to set up an earthly kingdom and rule over them, but God had another plan. God sent His Son into the world in a meek and lowly way. Instead of the sounding of trumpets, Jesus came of a virgin who also possessed the quality of meekness and humility. He was born in a manger because there was no room for Him in the inn. Jesus lived a life as a carpenter and not as a prince and even in the midst of His ministry He was a very humble man not seeking His own glory, but only desired to glorify the Father. Even when the King of kings entered the city of Jerusalem, He was not riding on a horse or in a chariot; instead Jesus was riding on a donkey (Matthew 21:5). Even in His death Jesus did not receive some long processional, but had to carry His own cross and was crucified with two thieves and placed in a borrowed tomb. That is not what we thought would be the life of the King of kings and Lord of lords. If that had been us, we would have expected just the opposite. Jesus, knowing who He was, remained meek and humble. Jesus tell us in Matthew 11:29 “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” We must take the yoke of Jesus upon ourselves and learn about Him. We must learn about Him because He is meek and lowly in heart” Once again we see that the fruit of the Spirit is a condition of the heart. On the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus proclaimed what is known to us as the Beatitudes. One of the Beatitudes states “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth:” (Matthew 5:5). When Christ returns we will reign with Him here on earth for 1000 years. Now we must understand that meekness does not mean weakness. Those that are meek are indeed not weak, because their strength lies in God. In the last part of the definition of word meek we noticed that it stated that we are “given to forbearance under injuries” This statement means that we must maintain self control even when people wrong us. During Jesus’ inquisition by Annas the father in law the High Priest Caiaphas, Jesus gave the Annas an answer they didn’t like one of those there hit Him in the face. Jesus simply replied “If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?” (John 18:23) Jesus maintained His composure in spite of having just been hit in the face. And we know that throughout this inquisition Jesus was beaten, and spit on, yet He held His peace. We too must maintain our meekness and humility even when someone wrongs us if we are to identify with Christ. So let’s take the yoke of Jesus upon us and learn to meek and humble. May the God of peace and the peace and love of God be with you always!
