The Fulbright Visiting Student Program: Junior Staff Development (JSD) Call for Applications: February 1Closing Date: May 1 The Junior Staff Development Program is a non-degree program funded by the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. and administered by the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Institute of International Education (IIE) in New York. The program is designed primarily to strengthen capacities of African universities through higher degree training and to develop the potential of their academic staff. It is targeted at young and exceptionally promising faculty members who wish to conduct their doctoral research in the United States. Applicants must be at least two years into their doctoral program in any discipline at a Nigerian university or research institute at the time of application. However, preference will be given to those applicants in the areas of natural and social sciences, arts, and humanities. Applicants are advised to read the instructions preceding the application carefully and seek the assistance of senior colleagues who are Fulbright alumna before they commence to fill in the forms. To expose Nigerian academics to the U.S. education system and standard research facilities for timely completion of their doctoral program. To promote teaching and research as well as manpower development for Nigeria’s higher institutions of learning. To expose grantees to leadership skills and voluntary service with a view to sensitizing them to imbibe these values when they return home. Eligibility Guidelines All prospective applicants for the Fulbright JSD Program must understand that the program is a non-degree program. Applicants must be a Nigerian citizen and resident at time of application and selection. Applicants must state their study/ research objectives clearly and concisely, including timeframe, methodology and program design for accomplishing the research. Applicants must be university lecturers who have registered for their Ph.D. and completed a reasonable amount of their research work. Applicants must be faculty members in the sciences, law, social science, law and humanities with uninterrupted years of experience in teaching and research. Applicants in the business and accounting courses are not guaranteed placement due to high competition in these areas. Successful applicants must be prepared to undergo a thorough medical examination conducted by a qualified physician from a recognized medical unit or university teaching hospital. An authorized health official or licensed physician must issue the results of the exam onto the prescribed medical form supplied by IIE and attach a medical certificate (if available). Successful applicants must also complete all immunization requirements before departing Nigeria. Applicants must attach copies of all diplomas and certificates to their application. In addition, applicants must send their resume and bio-data page of their Nigerian passport. Applicants must have a TOEFL score of no less than 80 and good GRE score at the time of or after submitting their application prior to the deadline.
