The GIVING PLEDGE- AMERICA @ ITS TRULY VERY FINEST: The truth is, there are PLENTY of prosperous people who act out of altruism, and there always have been. Look at the Ford, Hearst and Kroc foundations. Henry Ford, of course, founded the part of the auto industry, and then he, or his heirs, created a foundation. Same with the Hearsts (they of the publishing world) and of the Ray and Joan Kroc (who began the McDonalds chain) I heard a few years ago that the CEO of Walgreens was initiating a campaign to hire more handicapped people, because, first his own son is handicapped, and then he discovered that they actually make pretty good workers. Then there is the Giving Pledge- a group of moguls who were prompted by Warren Buffett & Bill & Melinda gates to give up 1/2 of their worth to philanthropic endeavors. Practically everyone in film, on tv, in music and sports has some sort of charitable foundation, and on a local and personal level, I have worked for non-profits in the social service sector for 10 years now & can say that every non-profit has a board of directors, prosperous, successful community pillars who do not get paid, to steer the organization, and they often hold events to raise needed funds. THIS is AMERICA @ ITS BEST. This is called sharing and it is the type of democracy that the GOP tries to thwart. The Obamas, like the Clintons, The Carters and the Kennedys, (who began the Special Olympics, dedicated to sister Rose, who was born developmentally disabled) are/were truly politicians who try/tried to encourage THIS GREAT NATION, from the TOP on down, to be this was, that is, AMERICA @ ITS BEST- and they are subsequently frowned upon. SAD, VERY SAD, TRULY VERY SAD. And so many blue collar workers, who would benefit from the policies that dems try to promote, are so often so easily swayed to the right, because they are under the impression that that is where the people who hold their interests are. And, unfortunately, those who are duped into this frame of thought are often poor and lower middle class whites. Sad to think this is where we are mired in 2013. WE should have been past this point decades ago.
