"The Ganchos go to London, play six songs, drink some beer and win a moral victory." What a bonkers night! When we rocked up to the venue (called Cargo) in "so hip it hurts" Shoreditch for the RPI X-Factor band competition our expectations were low but our spirits were very high. We were the first on the bill at 7pm – which meant we would probably be long forgotten by voting time. At 6.55 the venue was practically empty which didn’t bode well, then all of a sudden the be-quiffed, thick rimmed glasses wearing hipsters poured in. Boyed by the sudden arrival of an audience we decided to give it everything and scorched through our six song set list in 20 minutes. When we finished they whooped cheered and begged for “one more”! Unfortunately the organisers had six more bands to get through so we had to leave the stage. The judges feedback was positive, indifferent and downright rude in that order. “Ah well”, we thought, let’s put it down to experience and drink some beer. Throughout the evening an eclectic line-up of bands came and went, ranging from “Nu Prog Rock” to R&B Soul, and all very good in their own way. By 10.30 all the bands had played and the compère (who thought it was hilarious to call us the “Nachos” by the way) asked everyone to fill in ballot papers and vote for their favourite band. At this point we felt it was a good idea to get our coats and make a dash for the last train back to Hook. Before we had the opportunity one of the organisers rushed over to tell us that we had received the most votes “you what!!” we cried….."BUT"…he continued, that only puts you in the top three and it’s the judges who actually pick the winner. “Ah well”, we thought again and, as predicted, the judges chose another band. However the moral victory was ours – we were the people’s favourite and, to top it all, once the winning band had been announced the audience suddenly left - so the poor winners had to perform their 45 minute “victory set” to the bored looking bar staff. It was an amazing experience though and to top it all the event raised over £9k for Mencap and City Gateway. Rock and Roll!! gemserv/rpi-x
