The Goddess Kāmākhyā, in Assam, whose temple is built over a Shakti-peetha, or place that embodies an aspect of Devī. There are 52 Shakti-peethas around India; this one is said to be the place where Satīs yoni fell. The temple is built around a natural stone formation in the form of a vulva, which runs red (from iron ochres in the soil) in the rainy season. Ive never found a picture of the inner sanctum, but this high relief comes from the temple, which has been a center for Tantrik mystics for centuries. Devotees apply the red kumkum you see here as an act of devotion. In ancient times the place was called Kāmārupa, form of desire. The Ambubachi festival at Kāmākhyā celebrates the menstruation of the Goddess, including special all-women rites. Shared from: Suppressed Histories Archives
