The Great Chicago Underground Flood of 1992. A system of freight tunnels operated below Chicagos central business district from 1904 until 1959, providing access to the basements and sub-basements of many downtown buildings. During construction activity at the Kinzie Street Bridge on April 13, 1992, a new piling being driven into the river punctured a segment of the long disused tunnel system. Since many subterranean flood doors had been removed over the years, river water flooded many basements. The clean-up took 3 days. Net cost to the city in economic damage was estimated to be $1.95 billion.
