The Greens have listened to city residents and decided that a Council Tax rise of over 2% is needed so as to not reduce the entitlement thresholds for social care, and support re-ablement. Both Labour and the Tories centralised financial power leaving councils defenceless against the government. Councils need autonomy with full financial powers. They should be sovereign and not subject to the whims of the national elite. Council Tax is regrssive but leaving the vulnerable to suffer the cuts alone is even more regressive. This is what the Tories want and what Labour are supporting. The poorest houeholds are protected by Council Tax Reduction. They face a maximum increase of 14p per week. I am disabled and Im truly ashamed of Labour in saying they will block the people from deciding on whether to put the vulnerable first. Labour supports austerity and offers no real opposition to the governments plans. Warren talks about the cuts to the council but then blames the Greens for them. Greens have cut property costs, energy costs, water costs etc. but jobs and services have been saved. Protecting the environment means saving money in the long-term but Labour voted against just £10,000 to a key envrionmental scheme. Labour brings forth a motion of no confidence and a call for a caretaker administration but with no attempt at all to hold talks to achieve as such. It doesnt want to be in administration making cuts because that would ruin the facade of offering an alternative. This was just a political stunt! Labour, in their 13 years of government, allowed tax avoidance to grow massively to many tens of billions, let profits go abroad without being taxed, rental prices to sky-rocket whilst build too few a homes with no council development. It let energy and rail prices soar without nationalisation. If Labour offered a real alternative it would look like the Green one, similar to that often espoused by Labour member, Owen Jones. Warren just wants to seize power at the next election at all costs. The residents and the environment will pay the price. It is down to the Greens that budgets are published early for public consultation and that it may be amended as per residents needs. Labour dont want to come clean with residents about their support of austerity so will just continue to play politics at the expense of local people. #BHBudget #BrightonDecides #LetThePeopleDecide
