Henry County School Superintendent Announces Intent to Retire in 2014 ……………………… This article is from the Examiner and is written by Mr. Bruce Kendall. Thank you Bruce for the very well written article sir. HENRY COUNTY- During the September Monthly Study Session held Wednesday 4, September 2013, Dr. Ethan Hildreth declared his intent to retire saying, “Three years ago, the September 2010 Board of Education study session included as item H.1., the “Announcement of Superintendent of Schools.” The motion was made to approve me as Superintendent of Schools, and the Board unanimously approved the motion. I want to thank you now as I did then for this wonderful opportunity. The work of leading the school system has been exciting and rewarding beyond my expectations. I could not ask for a better team to work with, from the Board to the people here, to the schools and community. Thank you for your trust and confidence. Since that meeting occurred in September, perhaps there is an appropriate symmetry in my announcing this September, exactly three years later, another item related to the Superintendent position. In this case, it is the announcement of my intent to retire from Henry County Schools and K-12 public education effective April 1, 2014, pending receipt of the final retirement letter from the Teacher Retirement System of Georgia. This is simply a notice, and no Board action is needed at this time. It is my intent to provide this advance notice so the Board has ample time to determine the next Superintendent of Schools. I am proud of the work our school community is accomplishing, and I know great things are ahead for Henry County Schools. We have several months of good labor ahead on behalf of the students and families of Henry County Schools. For that reason, this is simply a notice of intent, and not a goodbye. I look forward to our work together in the coming months, and I will assist in whatever way best supports the Board and Henry County Schools during the future transition. Thank you. The problem arises around Council woman Vincent’s desires to be on the DDA of McDonough and be a voting member. She sees nothing wrong with it, but her fellow council members do, the Herald does, and private citizens do also. According to the charter of McDonough an elected member of the council who has voting privileges cannot be on an appointed board or committee that has voting privileges and where the elected official can have influence upon the votes of the other members of the DDA. The city has already sent out for people to declare for the jobs and 14 have responded. Now the council is considering going back and changing the rules so as to allow Ms. Vincent a chance to be on the authority. This is like changing race horses in the middle of a race. The charter was written to protect the image and values of the elected officials in dealing with boards, committees and authorities. In this case, Mr. Zachary is correct in his comments on the subject. But this needs to settle down soon or it can get out of hand. …………………………………………………………………………………………….. The Nash Farm People are at it Again According to a letter sent out from the Friends of Nash Farm Battlefield (this entity has been dissolved by the Secretary of States office.), they are asking people to donate money for a monument to the soldiers killed in the area during the summer of 1864. They have identified according to them 85 of the those who died there. (According to preliminary research many of those named did not die at Lovejoy.) They are wanting $21,000 to buy the piece of black granite for the monument. They are using the Henry County Governments 501c3 non-profit to ask for these donations. Cassie Barrow is the person who signed the letter and it appears that she is now the head of the Friends of Nash Farm Battlefield just not registered. If the Henry County Government wished to have a monument at the park, then the government of the county should be the entity seeking these donations since it is their 501c3 listed in the letter. …………………………………………………………………………………………….. To Boldly Go Where No Craft Has Been Before NASA has announced that the Voyager I space probe has left our Solar System. It is currently 12 billion miles from the sun. The craft is traveling at 36,000 miles per hour and has arrived in interstellar space. Voyager I passed through the boundary that encircles the solar system about six months ago. The signals coming from the craft are at about 23 watt which is equal to a refrigerator bulb. The data sent to earth from the ship are 160 bits per second and are captured by the 34 to 70 meter NASA Deep Space Network stations. Traveling at the speed of light the signal from Voyager I takes about 17 hours to travel to Earth. The data is collected at JPL and processed. Voyager I was launched in 1977 along with Voyager 2; 16 days later. This has been one of the most significant achievements in the annals of the history of science and adding a new chapter in human scientific dreams and endeavors. ……………………………………………………………………………………………… Early Voting to Begin October 14 For the General Election The General Election is scheduled for November 5, 2013 and will include elections for mayor and councilmen for Hampton, McDonough and Stockbridge, and a councilman for Locust Grove.
