The Hammond Growl https://youtube/watch?v=Zfe2qTYfleo [...] The tonewheel generator of a B3 contains the secret of the universe. Ordinary synth oscillators or sample engines can create sine waves very easy. BUT - they are an EPIC FAIL when it comes to emulating a B3, because the sine waves have to be perfectly synchronised, otherwise they randomly sum or cancel, or generally sound randomly out of phase when you play chords. They also are generally tuned to Equal Temperament, which means they beat like crazy - extremely noticable when you distort the signal, which is what a B3 tonewheel thrives on. The simple fact that ALL sinewaves coming from a tonewheel are ALLWAYS perfect synchronised because they share a common shaft solve any phase issues. Also, to get all the notes of the keyboard from one common shaft, Hammond solved any beating problems. This is mathematically harder than you would think - and the short version is that they had to bend the pitch of the tonewheels slightly to get them to work. The end result of a tonewheel generator is extremely pure and musical - cuts like a laser. You can literally play any tone cluster, with both arms and both feet, through a cranked Marshal amp, and it sounds like *music*, with no ugly beating or phaseness. Larry Ellis and his Black Hammer band were in their clapped-out van on their way to the recording studio in upstate new york. The van broke down on the way and cost them a few hours, but they managed to limp their way to the studio before it closed. They’d booked a long session, but by the time they arrived, they had just 30 minutes on the meter. Larry plugged in his b3 and they launched into ‘Funky Thing’, their regular warm-up tune, but no sooner had they finished than the studio engineer called it a day… luckily he had the tapes rolling, and this waxing is the result! But this is no mere warm-up. it’s hotter than jalapeno peppers fried in jalapeno oil in death valley. then lit on fire. on pam grier’s ass.
